The cleaner

  • A cornerstone of neo-liberal/ conservative economics is that government policies that support the rich to get richer and/ or support high end investments in poor neighbourhoods (such as the original redevelopment of Canary Wharf) will, by themselves, automatically result in some wealth ‘trickling down’ to benefit the lower classes through economic ‘growth’ or local job opportunities. The ‘trickle down effect’ was the vaunted economic credo of the 7 week prime ministership of Liz Truss and her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng (2022), which actually crashed the UK economy. There is no evidence that the trickle down effect works, and instead serves as a political ideology to increase existing economic inequalities (see the IMF’s statement on the fallacy of the trickle down effect quoted in this Tax Research blog.)
